aRoundTable 2021:
Milan Circular Project

Creation of a neighborhood Circular Hub to exchange items and knowledge

Description:

  • Support the creation of circular hubs in different neighbourhoods where people can share tools and things as well as competences. 

  • A physical market place embedded with circular economy  culture through education and engagement of citizens.

  • Collection center for waste (AMSA collection) ex. Electronic devices, textiles etc.

  • A place where to give space to artisans and creatives to share their know-how and make tools available for free use/sharing.

Impact:

  • Engaged young people and bottom of the pyramid citizens into circular economy practices

  • Participated educational activities on circular economy principles and about a more conscious consumption

  • Know-how of artisans and people shared through workshops or free lessons

  • Artisans and young people are supported by the community

  • Spread know- how on circular economy

  • Active social sharing 

  • Reached high level of engagement and entertainment 

  • Creation of support activities/funds for the small biz and start ups in different sectors

Resources Needed:

  • Location, ideally unused spaces in the city 

  • Engaged artisans and designers

  • Direct communication channels with schools and non-profit organisations

  • Public and private funding for supporting initiatives and projects

  • Dissemination strategy to reach citizens and engage them

  • Designers to design the space and the communication direct to citizens/organizations

  • Human resources such as event organisers, managing team, volunteers

  • Engaged partners such as AMSA, public organizations, NGOs, startups, schools, technical institutes, retired people, ethnic groups

Prototyping Plan:

  1. Engage local authority to find a space where to build the hub

  2. Find organisations/artisans/citizens associations to involve and co-design the shared space.

  3. Understand needs and tools to make available into the shared space and engage stakeholders.

  4. Scouting for supporting the initiatives and engage artisans, associations, schools in workshops and events.

  5. Create specific events related to swap and sharing and make the community vibrant.

  6. Spread communication and find synergies with other hubs and initiatives around the city. Expand events and offering.

Scalability Plan:

  • Develop a standardized concept to enable localization based on neighborhood/ needs

  • Identify key neighborhoods to start and neighborhoods to expand in the future

  • Clearly identify key stakeholders to be involved

  • Engage citizens and develop a clear vision of how interact with them

  • Achieve a sellable product/service to generate revenue

Implementation Plan:

  • By 2021: Define the coordinators team

  • By 2021: Identify key actors to manage the space and identify governance processes

  • By 2021: Contact municipality for identify unused location/space

  • By 2021: Map stakeholders and cluster them into key target groups

  • By 2021: Engage key groups into co-design of the space

  • By 2021: Understand tools/instruments needed (e.g. 3D printer, etc)

  • 2021-early 2022: Organize events and workshops with citizens, organisations, schools

  • 2021-early 2022: Creation of a calendar of events to promote the space

  • early 2022: Improve the capacity of actors to share their knowledge and know-how through various activities

  • early 2022: Engage designers and communication experts to disseminate

  • 2021-early 2022: Communicate the project in the neighborhood and outside
